The SL for the 1990s, Mercedes-Benz’ R129 of 1989 has an enduring image as a landmark model for the Stuttgart firm. With precision engineering, timeless design, and innovative features, the R129 SL has become a sought-after classic among collectors and enthusiasts.

This peak model in terms of "over-engineering", Bruno Sacco’s design brought in innovations such as an electronic automatic roll bar, electrically controlled damping, and integral seats. The design, based on a shortened floorpan of the W124 saloon, was finalised in 1984 but launched some 5 years later at the 1989 Geneva Motor Show. The model was facelifted in 1998, with redesigned bumpers, new tail-lamps, larger 17-inch wheels as standard, and a new generation of M112 V6 and M113 V8 engines. The interior also received chrome-ringed dials, softer leather, and a sport package. Production ended in 2001 after 237,000 units with the launch of the replacement R230 model.

First registered in June 2000, this well maintained example has been in the care of just two owners from new. A later facelifted model, powered by the revised 224bhp 3.2 litre V6 motor, the SL stayed with its first keeper until changing hands to the last private owner in 2008. In that time the SL has been maintained by Mercedes-Benz or marque specialists, with a total of 18 service stamps across original and then duplicate service books.

Specified from new in classic Smoke Silver with a Mushroom leather interior and Chestnut convertible roof, the SL features 17” alloy wheels, rear seats, a wind deflector, electrically powered and heated memory seats, air conditioning, ABS/cruise control, electric door mirrors, and the original factory radio/cassette with boot mounted CD player.

Complete with original factory overmats, both keys, full book pack with aforementioned service books, a number of older MoT certificates and other documentation, this is a genuine example of a modern classic.
